"Labor and Social Security Law – Dialogue Between Academic and Practice" is the subject of the annual event series organized by the Chair of Private Social Law at the University of Basel. The goal of the event series is to provide insight into the Chair’s diverse activities and, above all, to promote dialogue between legal scholarship and legal practice.

Past Events:

On the afternoon of September 11, 2025, an event subject to “The EO for All Situations—The EO in All Situations” took place at the Faculty of Law of the University of Basel. The conference featured various presentations on the Income Replacement Scheme (EO). The first presentation, by Prof. Matthieu Leimgruber of the University of Zurich and Prof. Martin Lengwil of the University of Basel, addressed the evolution of the EO since 1940. Following this, alumni Federal Judge Dr. iur. Susanne Leuzinger spoke about the role of Federal Supreme Court case law in the development of the EO Act. After these extremely fascinating presentations had laid the foundation for the conference, Prof. Ulrich Becker from the Max Planck Institute in Munich took the stage. Prof. Becker offered an outside perspective on the EO and attempted to compare the current situations in Germany and Switzerland. Following this comparison, attorney Andrea Künzli from the Federal Social Insurance Office (BSV) in Bern spoke about the pending legislative proposal to harmonize EO benefits. Building on the historical presentations, her contribution provided insight into the current political debate. Dr. iur. Sylvie Pétremand from the University of Lausanne concluded the presentations. She spoke about various possible approaches to the development of the EO. In her outlook, she frequently highlighted parallels with the past, which beautifully tied together the afternoon’s presentations.

In addition to the presentations, the conference featured other highlights. For example, Prof. Pärli’s new commentary on the Earned Income Replacement Act (EOG) was presented. This commentary is the first in Switzerland to address the Federal Act on Earned Income Replacement.

Following this eventful afternoon, a cocktail reception took place in a cozy atmosphere, sponsored by the publisher Helbing Lichtenhan.

The symposium #iuscoronae - Jurisprudence in the Corona Crisis took place on May 3, 2021.

The corona crisis is also exceptional from a legal perspective: the member of the Federal Council ruled with emergency law, parliamentary work was suspended and referendums were postponed. The population, organizations and institutions were and are directly affected.

The #iuscoronae symposium provides an insight into the assessments and researches of Basel law professors on the legality and practical effects of these and other measures. The contributions show the range of legal research at the Faculty of Law of the University of Basel.

The symposium is aimed at researchers and students of all semesters, particularly at the Faculty of Law of the University of Basel, but also at other universities and research institutions. The lectures and panels will enable exchange and networking with all those present.
