The Faculty Prize 2024 to Dr. iur. Balthasar Jeremias Müller

The Faculty of Law is awarding the Faculty Prize 2024, donated by the law firm VISCHER, to Dr. iur. Balthasar Jeremias Müller, who closes a gap in Swiss literature with his dissertation "The implementation of positive duties to protect under Art. 8 ECHR in private law employment relationships in Swiss law". The influence of the ECHR on Swiss employment law is receiving increasing attention in the doctrine. In-depth and comprehensive analyses of individual issues are still rare. Balthasar Müller focuses on Art. 8 ECHR; this enables a thorough examination of the content of this provision and its significance for labor law. The study is an important contribution to the further development of Swiss labor law, taking into account the European Convention on Human Rights. The work contains valuable insights for both labor law practice and labor law scholarship. With his work, the author also contributes to the connectivity of Swiss labor law to the international discourse on "Human Rights and Labor-Rights".

The Amerbach Prize 2024 to Dr. Claudia Stühler

The Amerbach Prize of the University of Basel is awarded to Dr. iur. Claudia Stühler, who in her dissertation "Euthanasia in Cyborgs - Technical Implants at the End of Life" examined the conditions under which pacemaker defibrillators implanted in the body may be deactivated without penalty and not only developed concrete proposals for solutions for medical practice, but also innovatively developed the criminal law dogmatics of euthanasia.

The "Schwizerhüsli" 2024 prize for young talent to Niklaus Brunschwilier, MLaw

The Young Talent Award of the "Schwizerhüsli" student association, sponsored by the Ferdinand Neeracher-Pfrunder Foundation, is awarded to Niklaus Brunschwiler, MLaw, who in his master's thesis "The use of Super aEgis II in international armed conflict: A legal analysis of the human-out-of-the-loop mode in the light of the principle of distinction" examines whether fully autonomous weapons are capable of distinguishing lawful military from unlawful civilian targets. It thus makes an important contribution to the debate on whether the use of this new weapons technology can be reconciled with one of the most central principles of international humanitarian law.

We warmly congratulate them!
