Master's degree

Changing the Master's specialization

The specialization within a Master's degree program can be changed at any time, but only once. The change is applied for by e-mail to the Office of the Dean of Studies.

Please refer to the document Deadlines for the Master's degree for the last possible submission of an application for a change

Change of Master's degree program

A change of degree program occurs when students switch from one degree program to another. This change must be applied for when re-registering via Online Services.

Double Master's degree

If sufficient credit points are available, it is possible to complete the Master's degree in two specializations. In the case of a double degree, both Master's degrees must be completed in the same semester and a maximum of 45 credit points from the first Master's degree may be exempted in the second Master's degree transcript. The main Master's degree is the degree in which a total of 90 CPs are credited. The exempted CPs are no longer shown in the second Master's degree, which is why this Master's degree has fewer than 90 CPs. When applying for a Master's degree, it must be stated which Master's degree is to be the main Master's degree. Without this information, the Office of the Dean of Studies will determine the main Master's degree. In any case, two master's theses must be written. If you already have a Master's degree in law, you cannot start a new Master's studies program at the Faculty of Law.

Latin grades

All grades, including the grade of the master's thesis, count equally towards the Latin grades in the master's studies (MLawO ยง 24). Examinations taken in excess do not count towards the Latin grades. Grades from extracurricular academic achievements also do not count towards the grade average or Latin grades.

In the Eucor master's studies, only the academic achievements in Basel and the master's thesis count towards the Latin grades. Academic achievements at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Freiburg im Breisgau do not count towards the grade point average or Latin grades.

Additional academic achievements

Additional academic achievements are submitted on a separate sheet together with the final degree transcript.

Application for a Master's degree

Important information can be found here. The application for a Master's degree is made via ADAM.

Master's studies passed - confirmation

Upon request, the Office of the Dean of Studies will issue a confirmation that the Master's degree has been passed. The prerequisite for this is that the application for a Master's degree has been submitted and examined by the Office of the Dean of Studies. If all requirements for the Master's degree have been met, a letter of confirmation can be requested from the Office of the Dean of Studies. The letter can be accompanied by an academic record from the university showing when the grade for the last academic achievement was credited. As of this date, the master's studies have been passed.

Re-registration upon completion of master's studies

If no subsequent doctoral studies are planned at the University of Basel, Master's students no longer need to be matriculated for the doctoral semester. They can withdraw via Online Services until the end of the re-registration period. The prerequisite for this is that all assessments are credited to your account on the Sunday before the start of lectures. If the last assessments are not available until the day lectures start or later, you will have to matriculate again for the following semester.

If, contrary to expectations (e.g. in the case of insufficient academic achievements), you still need to register again for matriculation at the University of Basel, please register directly with the Student Administration Offices in the Kollegienhaus (main building). The de-registration will then be reversed.

All information on the subject of completing your Master's degree and exmatriculation or further matriculations in the following semester can be found on the information sheet "Dates for the next possible Master's degree".
