Master of Law (incl. specialization options)

The Master of Law (MLaw) can be completed with or without a specialization. In the free Master's degree, 48 or 60 CP are acquired from the subjects of the entire Master's curriculum, a small or large master's thesis is written and 12 CP are acquired from other faculties.

In the other specializations, 30 or 42 CP are acquired from the subjects of the respective specialization and a further 18 CP from the subjects of the entire Master's curriculum, a small or large master's thesis is written in the respective specialization and 12 CP are acquired from other faculties. The title Master of Law (MLaw) is awarded with a specialization or free master's studies.

A change of specialization in the master's degree program is possible once at any time during the master's studies. The change is applied for by e-mail to the Office of the Dean of Studies.

Specialization options The following specializations are available in the Master's studies:

  • Master's studies without special ization: In this degree program, the Master's lectures can be freely arranged.
  • Generalist specialization: This degree program is geared towards the needs of generalists with regard to the bar exam.
  • Specialization inInternational Law: This specialization is particularly suitable for those wishing to enter the diplomatic service or work for an international organization.
  • Specialization inPublic Law : This specialization focuses primarily on subjects relevant to working in the public administrations of the Confederation and the cantons.
  • Specializationin Life Sciences Law : This specialization is aimed at students who are particularly interested in an in-depth overview of the legal subjects of life sciences, e.g. intellectual property (intellectual property law), contract law, therapeutic products law, health law and liability law.
  • Specialization in criminal law: This specialization is suitable for people who would like to work as a court clerk at a criminal court or as a public prosecutor, for example.
  • Possible focus areas: As part of the master's studies, it is possible to choose from a variety of subject areas. For example, from the field of international criminal law or private law in its international context.
