Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court

Each year the University of Basel sends a team of students to compete in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition in Vienna.

What is the Vis Moot?

The Vis Moot Court has taken place annually since 1994, culminating each year in the city of Vienna (or in virtual Vienna in 2020 and 2021) when over 2500 law students from close to 400 law schools across more than 80 countries come together to battle it out in a simulated arbitration concerning a CISG international sale of goods dispute. The journey to Vienna begins each year in October when the case file is released. During the following months members of the moot team assume the roles of lawyers on a legal team, conducting research and preparing written memoranda on behalf of their client and eventually arguing their case before a panel of expert judges in Vienna.

What are the benefits of participating in the Vis Moot?

Team members have the unique opportunity to work closely with experts in the fields of international arbitration and commercial law, gain practical insights from working on a complicated legal case, present their arguments to professionals throughout Switzerland and abroad, improve their written and oral English skills, and make connections with students, lawyers, and professors from around the world.

Course structure: The Vis Moot will be credited as a grosse Masterarbeit with 30 ECTS
