Work spaces and study areas

The JF Library has around 300 work spaces.

Reading rooms and meeting rooms

  • 4 reading rooms with around 200 individual work spaces (including eight height-adjustable desks) with network connection
  • 8 small and 2 large meeting rooms for group work

These works spaces and meeting rooms cannot be reserved.

Reservable work spaces

  • For PhD students
    • PhD students matriculated in Basel who are writing a legal dissertation have the opportunity to write their dissertation in the doctoral rooms and reserve shelves for the required literature. For the allocation of these work spaces, the staff at the information desk require confirmation from the first supervisor (see gray box).
    • With the approval of the library management, work spaces can be reserved in exceptional cases for doctoral and postdoctoral students who are not matriculated in Basel.
  • For master's theses
    • Master's degree program students can write their master's thesis in library rooms 4 and 5 for three months and borrow books on a shelf assigned to them. For the allocation of these work spaces, the staff at the information desk require the completed application form with a visa from the Office of the Dean of Studies (see gray box)
  • For Moot Court
    • Moot Court teams can reserve a study room in the JF Library depending on availability. Applications for reservations must be registered at the information desk.

Lockers and checkroom Coats and bags may be brought into the library as long as they do not occupy another work spaces. A limited number of lockers are located on the first floor and in the courtyard of the building.
