Scientific Advisory Board (SAB)

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) supports the Faculty of Law in the quality development of legal research. As a rule, it meets annually as part of an SAB site visit to reflect on the process with the Faculty and the Vice-Rectorate Research.

The Rectorate of the University of Basel appointed the Scientific Advisory Board proposed by the Faculty of Law on February 1, 2022. The first site visit will take place in spring 2023.

The Scientific Advisory Board of the Faculty of Law currently consists of three permanent members:

Prof. Dr. iur. Susanne Beck

is a full professor of criminal law, criminal procedural law, comparative criminal law and philosophy of law at the Faculty of Law at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Her research focuses on questions of attribution in criminal law, the effects of modern technologies and fundamental questions in the field of criminal law. She has been Dean of Studies since 2021.

"As Dean of Studies in our faculty, I am also interested in taking a detailed look at and supporting the development of a progressive law faculty. In this respect, I hope to be able to contribute my experience and knowledge to the Faculty of Law at the University of Basel."

Prof. Dr. Laura Bernardi

is a full professor of Sociology and Demography of the Life Course at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lausanne. Her research focuses on the demography of the life course, family and migration issues and mental health with a focus on European conditions and social inequalities.

"In general, I am very interested in the scientific policy of academic institutions and how it is reflected and implemented by the different faculties. In partcular, as I am very convinced of the crucial interdependencies between legal regulations and societal development, I am interested in learning what is the stand of interdiciplinarity and empirical sciences in the teaching, and research structure of the faculty."

Prof. Thierry Tanquerel

is an honorary professor at the University of Geneva, where he researched and taught as a full professor at the Faculty of Law from 1996 to 2018. His research focuses on general administrative law and comparative constitutional and spatial planning law. He also devotes his work to overarching topics such as direct democracy and interdisciplinarity and research evaluation in the legal sciences.

"I am delighted to be contributing to the quality of legal research in Switzerland, with the stimulus and impartiality that my honorary professorship brings, as well as the critical perspective developed in my work on research evaluation at the Centre for Legislative Research, Technology and Evaluation (CETEL)."
