ORCID

Here you will find introductory information and the most important instructions for maintaining your ORCID profile. For further information, please refer to the ORCID support pages.

What is ORCID and why should you register?

ORCID stands for OpenResearcherand ContributorID and is a global non-profit organization that provides individual researchers with a unique and free digital identifier. The same ID can be used throughout one's career, regardless of job changes, new funding sources, or variations in name or research area. With an ORCID (sometimes called an ORCID iD), you enter your data once and re-use it many times reducing form-filling. It improves the recognizability and findability of you and your research results. The organization also works with many institutions, sponsors and publishers. It improves recognition and discoverability for you and your research outputs and is interoperable working with many institutions, funders, and publishers. Notably, grant applications, such as those for SNSF, no longer require a list of publication, but only the ORCID iD. It is therefore essential to register and also maintain your ORCID iD (more information on CV format SNSF).

How does registration and profile maintenance work?

Registration form

Register your ORCID iD by filling out the registration form. After registration, you have full control of your ORCID record and you can update, add information or give others permission to do so by signing into your account. Consider adding a backup email for account recovery in case you lose access to your email.

Profile maintenance

Maintain your ORCID profile by making the necessary entries. Some of these must be entered manually. Publications mostly can be imported automatically. To do this, link your ORCID with "Trusted Organizations" to automatically import information about your data set.

Adding publications

You can either import publications into your profile by linking your ORCID with other trusted partners or add them yourself:

Adding independently

Add publications under "Works" using the "Add" button. Most of the options offered also work via a database link and the publication is entered in just a few steps.

Linking with trusted partners
  1. Click on the “Connect your ORCID iD” button within the relevant system. If you are not already signed in to your ORCID record, you will be taken to the ORCID site to do so.
  2. You will be asked to authorize the system to interact with your record in various ways (e.g. update your research activities).
  3. On the authentication page, you choose whether you want to
  • allow long-term authorizations,
  • only allow short-term authorizations,
  • deny all authorizations.

Allowing long-term permissions allows you to benefit from the organization continuing to read, add, and update your record.

This system is now one of your trusted organizations. If you wish to revoke permissions for any trusted organization, go to “Account Setting”, “Trusted Organizations”, and click the trash can “Revoke Access” icon next to the relevant system:

Important

  • If you are submitting a funding application (e.g. to the SNSF), it is important that the visibility settings are set to "Everyone". Otherwise, your publications will not be visible to external persons and may negatively affect your chances of receiving funding.
  • You can check what your public record looks like by clicking on the "Preview public record" link under your ORCID iD at the top left of your record.
  • Include your iD when prompted to do so in manuscript submission, grant applications (e.g. SNSF), the University of Basel’s research information management system (UNIverse) and many other systems. This will make it easier for you to maintain your profile.
