"On the anniversary of Bilaterals I and II - all good things come in threes?"
2024 marks a double anniversary for the bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU: the Bilateral Agreements I package was signed 25 years ago, and Bilateral Agreements II 20 years ago. Negotiations are currently underway on a package that is increasingly being referred to in the public debate as "Bilaterals III".
Prof. Dr. Christa Tobler (Institute for European Global Studies) and Prof. Dr. Andreas Müller (Faculty of Law) are organizing a public intergenerational discussion with National Councillor Sarah Wyss and Prof. em. Dr. Georg Kreis on the history, present and future of Switzerland's bilateral path.
Sarah Wyss is a Swiss National Councillor for the Social Democratic Party (SP). She is currently President of the Finance Committee of the National Council and President of the Basel section of the European Movement Switzerland. Previously, she was a member of the Grand Council for Canton of Basel-Stadt. She holds a Master's degree in European Studies from the Institute for European Global Studies.
Prof. em. Dr. Georg Kreis , Professor of Modern General History and Swiss History at the Department of History at the University of Basel, was the founding director of the Institute for European Global Studies, heading it for almost 20 years and making a significant contribution to its development and expansion. Even after his retirement in 2011, he remains closely associated with the Institute for European Global Studies and is active in the Institute in many ways.
The event is open to the public and will be followed by an aperitif.
