Organizers: Prof. Anna Petrig, University of Basel/CH & Prof. Yarik Kryvoi, British Institute of International and Comparative Law, London/UK

Description: The Basel Winter Arbitration School and the Summer London Arbitration Schools last one week each and introduce participants, mainly LL.M. students, doctoral students and young practitioners, to the world of international arbitration. The two schools, which feature a complementary program, introduce the participants to a variety of arbitration mechanisms (ranging from business and human rights arbitration to outer space arbitration) and a range of transversal topics (such as transparency, ethics and diversity). The lectures are provided by renowned experts from academia, practice and representatives of arbitral institutions. The two schools are rounded off by a public “opening keynote” and a “closing keynote”, each of which addresses current topics. The learning process is supported by providing the participants access to a learning platform with selected content and the writing of a reflective journal based on questions from the lecturer and under the guidance of the course organizers.

Format: The two schools are run on a hybrid basis; the online format allows people with smaller budgets or little time to participate.

Participants: Both schools attract a high number of applications from persons around the globe. The Basel Winter Arbitration School 2022, for example, was attended by almost 80 participants from 27 countries and the London Summer Arbitration School 2022 attracted 72 participants from 40 different countries.

Dates: Since 2021, the schools take place on a yearly basis. The Basel Winter Arbitration School takes place in February, while the London Summer Arbitration School is conducted in June.
