Scientific Advisory Board of the Faculty of Law

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) supports the Faculty of Law in the quality development of research in law. As a rule, it meets annually with the Faculty and the Vice-Rectorate for Research as part of an SAB site visit for the purpose of reflection.

The Rectorate of the University of Basel appointed the Scientific Advisory Board proposed by the Faculty of Law on February 1, 2022. The first site visit will take place in spring 2023.

Currently, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Faculty of Law consists of three permanent members:

Prof. Dr. iur. Susanne Beck

is a full professor of criminal law, criminal procedural law, comparative criminal law and philosophy of law at the Faculty of Law of Leibniz Universität Hannover. Her research focuses on questions of attribution in criminal law, on the modes of action of modern technologies, and on fundamental questions in the field of criminal law. She has been Dean of Studies since 2021.

"Looking at and accompanying the development of a progressive law school in detail also interests me as Dean of Students in our faculty. In this respect, I hope to be able to contribute my experience and insights to the Faculty of Law at the University of Basel."

Prof. Dr. Laura Bernardi

is a full professor of Sociology and Demography of the Life Course at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lausanne. Her research focuses in particular on questions related to the demography of the life course, family and migration issues, and mental health, with a focus on European conditions and social inequalities.

"In general, I am very interested in the scientific policy of academic institutions and how it is reflected and implemented by the different faculties. In partcular, as I am very convinced of the crucial interdependencies between legal regulations and societal development, I am interested in learning what is the stand of interdiciplinarity and empirical scienes in the teaching, and research structure of the faculty."

Prof. Thierry Tanquerel

is an honorary professor at the University of Geneva, where he researched and taught as a full professor at the Faculty of Law from 1996 to 2018. His research focuses on general administrative law as well as comparative constitutional and spatial planning law. In addition, he devotes his work to overarching themes such as direct democracy or interdisciplinarity and research evaluation in law.

"Je suis heureux de contribuer à la qualité de recherche juridique en Suisse, avec le recul et l'impartialité que peut m'apporter mon statut de professeur honoraire, ainsi que le regard critique développé dans mes travaux sur l'évaluation de la recherche au sein du Centre d'étude, de technique et d'évaluation législatives (CETEL)."
